The quality and profile of the speakers was excellent

The keynote speakers at the 5th Annual Data Protection Compliance Conference were:

  • Richard Thomas
    UK Information Commissioner

  • Peter Hustinx
    European Data Protection Supervisor

  • Philippe Renaudière
Data Protection Officer at the European Commission in Brussels

 - Peter Hustinx, European Data Protection Supervisor -

Hearing about the approach of the ICO from Richard Thomas was particularly useful

Norman Andrews, Consumer Affairs & Technical Manager
Equity Insurance Group Limited

Eduardo Ustaran of Field Fisher Waterhouse, was a colourful and entertaining Conference Chairman.

New speakers this year included:

  • Christopher Kuner, author of European Data Privacy Law and Online Business

  • Chris Gaines, an IT security expert at Deloitte

  • Dan Cooper, a graduate of Princeton, Harvard and Oxford (he was asked by Eduardo to state which one was any good!)

  • Mark Watts, a highly entertaining speaker

  • Timothy Pitt-Payne, who spoke on the year's significant data protection cases in the UK and Europe

  • Bojana Bellamy, the highly energetic and entertaining Head of Global Privacy at Accenture

The feedback from the delegates was very good. This year's event had moved to a new venue to accommodate the larger number of delegates, and was still filled to capacity.  PDP will be looking for an even larger venue for next year.

Three of the four Workshops on offer for Day 2 filled to capacity early in the booking period, leading to the rolling out of extra sessions to accommodate demand.  The Workshops, led by Bridget Treacy and other experts at Barlow Lyde & Gilbert, Rosemary Jay of Pinsent Masons, Dan Cooper of Covington & Burling, and Mark Watts of Bristows, were very well received by the delegates.

All in all, it was a highly useful learning and networking event.  One significant theme from this year's event is that information security is the next big thing on the horizon.  New legislation is expected from Brussels next year which will affect all companies that use laptop computers, all companies that have internal networks, and all companies that have a presence on the world wide web.  So, in essence, this is a new area that will affect all companies!

For a media/technology lawyer constantly advising on the handling of personal data, the First Data Protection Conference was an invaluable chance to keep up to date with the latest thinking not just on the wider issues of privacy and data protection but also on the many tricky or unclear areas of law and practice.  The speakers were all expert and experienced and the debate was informed and lively
